Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment through our clinic, either online or by contacting us directly.

What should I expect in terms of paperwork?

New clients are advised to arrive 15-20 minutes early for their first session to complete necessary paperwork. Doing so ensures you can maximize your session time.

What should minors expect about accessing therapy?

New clients who are under 18 require consent from their parents/legal guardians to access therapy. Parents/legal guardians must be present to meet with the therapist for the first appointment to provide consent for the minor.

After the initial appointment, confidentiality is ensured between the minor and the therapist unless safety concerns or other concerns require more parental/guardian involvement/attention. Specific limits to confidentiality are unique to each case and can be discussed further at the first appointment.

Do both parents/legal guardians need to be present and provide consent for the minor?

If parents/legal guardians reside together (are partners, common-law, or married), one parent/legal guardian can attend the initial appointment, review consent, and provide consent. If parents/legal guardians DO NOT reside together (separated or divorced), depending on custody arrangements, BOTH parents/legal guardians need to attend the initial appointment or provide contact information to have an initial phone call with the therapist before the therapist begins services with the minor.

If custody arrangements indicate otherwise (e.g., there is a court order indicating sole custody and decision-making for the minor), the parent/legal guardian needs to bring in or email/forward proof and documentation of the court order. If further questions/concerns are not answered, contact Melissa Hanson directly.

What about confidentiality?

As confidentiality is paramount, your information is secure and won’t be shared without your written consent unless extenuating circumstances exist. Any extenuating circumstances that cause limits to confidentiality will be discussed in further detail at the initial appointment.

Can I receive therapy if I am outside Alberta?

Melissa is registered to practice in Alberta. Therefore, clients must be located in Alberta during virtual or telehealth sessions.
